Monique Lovering Studio

After gaining a BA in Fine Arts from Queensland College of Art in Australia, I moved around in the art departments of publishing and advertising. Then I based myself in the UK and began working as a freelance Art Director for lifestyle magazines. I had some dream jobs: British Vogue, Vogue Australia, Vanity Fair UK, Tatler UK, and Elle Decoration UK. My work took me to Italy, United Kingdom, and Australasia. I loved collaborating with all the talented people involved in fashion and lifestyle, but my real passion was to create my own artwork. So, I returned to Sydney, Australia and became a full-time artist. Since then, I’ve had solo and group shows in Sydney, UK and Italy.

I am compelled to paint.
‘What drives me is the desire to explore notions of sensation, memory, vulnerability and my perception of daily life. My response to ‘memory’ is to allow the paint and charcoal to act from a place of impulse and chance in an unedited display of sensation that distorts the glimpses of memory into a dream state. Marks are imposed and covered over and over, capturing the sequence of glimpses as they filter into consciousness.

My experience of ‘memory’ is that it is like being in a dream state, images and sensations are the initial recorders. Boldly, with a sense of fragility, I allow, emotions to respond as marks on the surface of the painting. Focus is given to the nature of each mark, its impulses, transparency, pace and direction, shedding all inhibitions, and exposing a raw trace of humanity.’
